The C-SAW campaign was launched in December 2005 with the aim to improve the links for cyclists, walkers and the disabled between Salisbury and the outlying communities of Wilton and Alderbury
The current situation is as follows:
  • From Wilton cyclists must negotiate the busy A36 from the A30 roundabout. If cyclists opt to use the narrow pavement on the south side of the A36 there is possible conflict with pedestrians and there is no crossing point across the A3094 at the dangerous Park Wall junction. There are other difficulties on the route into Salisbury, including the traffic levels and lorries on Churchfields Road.

  • From Alderbury there is no safe crossing point across the A36 from Alderbury and Marshmead Close for cyclists or pedestrians. The cycle route along the Southampton Road does not extend to the east of the Tesco roundabout and traffic levels on this road make it quite unsuitable for cyclists.
Alderbury and Wilton are sizeable settlements, both within easy cycling distance of Salisbury and safe routes from these communities could be used by commuters, school children and shoppers. This route also forms part of Sustrans National Cycle Network 24 between Bristol and Southampton.

In 2006 a petition supporting these links was signed by 1006 people and in December 2006 the special group set up by Salisbury District Council's Environment & Transport Scrutiny Panel to investigate why these links have not been delivered concluded that "overwhelmingly the people of Salisbury District have asked for these routes" and that "given some political support and direction ... the majority of both routes can be achieved in the next 1-3 years".

Latest news update January 2008
Thanks to support from around the country, in December 2007 Sustrans Connect2 project won £50 million from the Big Lottery Fund to invest in walking and cycling across the UK . For more details see Sustrans Connect2 website.

The links from Salisbury to Alderbury and Wilton are one of the 79 projects which make up Connect2, and the money provided by Sustrans will be matched by Local Authority funding. COGS will be working with Sustrans and other parties to take this project forward in 2008 and this website will be updated with details of progress.

Thanks to everyone for their support to date!
